Betzy
Feminine · “my God is an oath”
Almost every English nickname takes the front of a name. Elizabeth is the great exception: Beth, Bess, Betty, Betsy and Liza all come from the back or the middle, and the front of the name is barely used at all. Betzy is the Spanish-influenced spelling of one of those back-end forms, and the z is doing exactly the job the s does.

The story of Betzy
Elizabeth has been one of the central women's names of the English-speaking world since the Reformation, and the sheer number of short forms it produced is a measure of how heavily it was used. Betsy came out of Bet, itself from the middle of the name, with the -sy ending English attaches to make a diminutive. Spanish-speaking families in the Americas took up Betsy and wrote it their own way: in Latin American Spanish the s and the z are the same sound, so Betzy is not a respelling so much as an equally correct choice. The record here is strongest in California and dates mostly from the later twentieth century onward.

my God is an oath
From the Hebrew Elisheva. The first element is God without question; the second is read either as an oath — so a promise sworn — or as abundance, giving something closer to God is plenty. Both are serious and both are old, and English name books have printed each of them confidently for two centuries.

Two syllables, stress on the first. In Latin American Spanish the z is said as an s, so the spelling and the sound agree exactly; in Spain the z would be a th, which is why the name is written this way in the Americas and rarely in Europe.

The Letisha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Betzy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Letisha climbed just as high around 1979, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Letisha's path sketches the road Betzy is walking now.
Betzy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a legitimate Spanish spelling rather than an American invention.
- The name behind it is among the most documented in the language, with an unbroken history.
- Two syllables, five letters, and no difficulty for a speaker of either language.
- It reads as warm and informal without sounding childish.
- Betsy is the standard English spelling and will be written instead constantly.
- In Spain the z would be said as a th, so European relatives may find the spelling odd.
- As a given name it reads as a nickname to English speakers, who will ask what it is short for.
