Where it comes from

The story of Besse

Bess of Hardwick was born to minor Derbyshire gentry and died the richest woman in England after the queen, having married four times, each time upward, and having outlived all four. She built compulsively. Chatsworth was hers, and so was Hardwick Hall, put up in her seventies with more glass than any house in England had ever had — the rhyme about Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall, is contemporary. Along the entire roofline, cut into stone balustrades and visible from the park, she had her initials set in letters several feet high, crowned. It is a signature at architectural scale, made by a woman whose legal existence had been absorbed into four successive husbands, and it is still legible from the road.

God is my oath, at three removes

The formal name is Elizabeth, from a Hebrew sentence whose second element is read as an oath, as seven, or as the divine name — the Hebrew is genuinely ambiguous. This familiar form is three steps from it and the ambiguity travels the whole way.

Besse sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1889, with 39 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Besse sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable is short, clear and carries across a room.
  • The formal name stands behind it for occasions that want one.
  • Five letters make it compact on any form.
What to consider
  • Bess and Bessie are both commoner and will be written for it.
  • The added letter invites a second syllable that is not intended.
  • It reads as belonging firmly to the nineteenth century.
