The story of Beryle
Beryl Markham grew up in Kenya, trained racehorses and flew planes, and became the first person to fly solo nonstop across the Atlantic from east to west, against the prevailing winds; she crash-landed in Nova Scotia. Her memoir, West with the Night, was praised by Hemingway. Beryl had come into English as a name in the fashion for gem names, and Beryle adds a final e that no older form has.
