Where it comes from

The story of Berton

One man with the surname walked into Mecca in disguise and got away with it. He spoke Arabic and Hindustani and a great many other languages, spent a year preparing the imposture down to the details of how he shaved, made the pilgrimage as a Pathan doctor, took notes in a book concealed in his robes and published the account to enormous scandal and enormous sales. He also translated the Arabian Nights in full and unexpurgated, which the Victorian public bought by subscription to avoid the obscenity laws. His widow burned a great deal of his work after his death.

Meaning

the fortified farmstead

Two Old English elements, one meaning a fort or stronghold and one meaning a settlement. Several dozen places carry the compound, which is why the surname is scattered across England.

Berton sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 46 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Berton sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Bert sits inside it as a short form that needs no explaining.
  • It belongs to the surname-name tradition without being a common example.
  • The spelling gives no trouble at all.
What to consider
  • Burton is the standard spelling and this one gets corrected.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
  • The changed vowel is inaudible, so the effort is spent on paper alone.
