Where it comes from

Our story of Bernette

The story Bern tells about itself is that its founder went hunting and named the town after the first animal he killed, which was a bear. Whether that is where the name came from is doubtful; it may be older. But the city committed. A bear pit was recorded in the fifteenth century and there have been bears in Bern more or less continuously since, through wars, occupations and several relocations, most recently into a riverside park rather than a pit. The animals have names, the city budget has a line for them, and the coat of arms has carried a bear since the Middle Ages. It is a rare case of a place choosing to make a possibly false etymology permanently true.

Bernadette and Bernice are both offered as sources. They are unrelated names, one Germanic and one Greek, which means the two candidates give completely different answers to the meaning question, and the record chooses neither.

Fashion outlook

Bernette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Bernie and Nettie are both available as short forms and both are long established.
  • The stress is unmistakable, so it is rarely mispronounced on a first reading.
  • It is rare on paper while being built entirely of familiar pieces.
What to consider
  • Bernadette and Burnette are both in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you often.
  • The two candidate parents are unrelated names, so there is no single meaning to give.
  • It reads as a name of an older American generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
