Where it comes from

The story of Bernetta

Bernadette Soubirous was fourteen, asthmatic, poor and barely literate when she reported eighteen visions at a grotto outside Lourdes in the eighteen-fifties. She was interrogated by the police, the church and the press, never changed her account, joined a convent and died at thirty-five, and the town became one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world. The whole Bern- family of names went back into use across Catholic Europe on the strength of it, and the American record shows Bernadette, Bernetta, Bernita and Bernice all rising in the decades afterwards.

Meaning

brave as a bear

The Germanic compound joins the animal to a word for bold or hardy. The ending is borrowed from Italian and carries no sense of its own.

Fashion outlook

Bernetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Every part of it is familiar, so the name is read correctly at sight.
  • It carries three short forms, each a standing name somewhere.
  • The meaning is concrete and easy to explain: an animal and a quality.
What to consider
  • Bernita, Bernetta and Bernadette are near neighbors and will be confused.
  • The Italian-looking ending has no Italian history on this base.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the turn of the twentieth century.
