Where it comes from

The story of Bernerd

Bernard has been used in England since the Middle Ages. American English says it two ways, ber-NARD with the stress at the end and BUR-nerd with the stress at the front, and Bernerd is the second saying written down. The spelling has had an unlucky twentieth century, because its last four letters became a word. Nerd first appeared in print in Dr. Seuss's If I Ran the Zoo, as one of the imaginary creatures the boy narrator plans to collect, and soon afterward turned up in American teenage slang. None of that has anything to do with the name, which was on birth certificates before Seuss drew his Nerd.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Writes one of the two established American pronunciations of Bernard exactly, so it is read as it is said.
  • Bernie and Barney are ready short forms.
  • Belongs to a name with forms across Europe.
What to consider
