Bernell belongs to a family of American men's names built with the same ending: Darnell, Odell, Terrell, Montell, Lavell. The ending is not a suffix in any language, it carries no meaning, and it is not inherited from anything. It is a shape that American naming found useful, applied to a wide range of fronts, and used steadily for the better part of a century.

The story of Bernell
The medieval Burnells were a real family and produced one genuinely interesting figure. Robert Burnell was Edward the First's chancellor, ran the government for the better part of two decades, and was the king's candidate for Canterbury twice. He was refused both times, and the reason given, more or less openly, was his private life: he was widely known to keep a household with a woman in it and to have provided for several children. The king kept pressing, the papacy kept declining, and Burnell stayed chancellor and bishop of Bath and Wells until he died, having built himself an enormous house in Shropshire that is still standing as a ruin. The name descended as a surname and eventually turned up, respelled, on American certificates alongside its rhyme-family.

Not established
The front may come from the Bernard family of names, or from a Norman nickname about coloring, or from neither; the ending contributes nothing. Where a family took it from a surname the meaning belongs to that surname, and where it was assembled from a front and an ending there is no meaning at all. The spelling records neither case, so no reading can be given with confidence.
How the name formed
- A Norman nickname and a medieval English surname
- Respelled and used as an American first name

Pronouncing Bernell
ber-NELL
Two syllables with the stress at the back, which is what the ending does to every name it lands on. That back stress is most of the reason the ending was so productive: it gives a short name a definite shape.

Fashion outlook
Bernell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The back stress makes it carry well and it is never mispronounced.
- It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
- It belongs to a coherent and well-documented family of American names.
- There is no reliable meaning, and the honest answer describes the family rather than translating.
- Burnell, Bernell and Barnell are all in the records and will be confused.
- It is firmly of the earlier twentieth century and has had no revival.
