Where it comes from

The story of Berenise

Berenice was a royal name in the Hellenistic world, and the Berenice best known to later literature is the Jewish princess loved by the Roman emperor Titus, who sent her away when Rome would not accept her. In 1670 Jean Racine made that parting into Bérénice, a tragedy in which nobody dies; his preface argued that a tragedy needs grandeur and sorrow, not blood. Edgar Allan Poe used the name very differently in 1835, for a story whose narrator becomes obsessed with his cousin Berenice's teeth; readers complained to the magazine, and Poe trimmed it for a later printing. In Spanish the name is Berenice, said with an s, and Berenise writes it the way it sounds.

Fashion outlook

Berenise sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Greek meaning, 'bringer of victory'.
  • Belongs to a royal and literary name with more than two thousand years of use.
  • Written the way it is said in Spanish, so Spanish-speaking family will read it correctly.
What to consider
  • English speakers will expect Berenice or Bernice and may say it three different ways.
  • Poe's story is a real association; few people know it, but a well-read teacher might.
  • Outside Spanish-speaking families it will need both spelling and pronouncing.
