Where it comes from

The story of Benny

Rachel names her last son Ben-Oni, son of my sorrow, as she is dying, and Jacob immediately renames him Benjamin, son of the right hand — one of the very few places where a biblical name is changed in the moment it is given, and the emotional logic is plain. Benny is a household form for both that name and the Latin Benedicta, and it appears in American records for women in the 1930s.

Meaningscholars disagree

son of the right hand; or blessed

Benjamin joins ben, a son, to yamin, the right hand, meaning the favored side. Benedicta is Latin for blessed. The short form carries either and the two are unrelated.

Benny sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2025, with 32 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
