Written this way the last syllable becomes the English word man, and the name reads as a compound it is not. The standard spelling ends in a reduced vowel that could be written with almost any letter; choosing an a makes a word appear, which is the sort of thing respellings do without meaning to.

Where it comes from

The story of Benjaman

He was named twice and the first name did not survive the day. His mother, dying in childbirth on a roadside, called him son of my sorrow — Ben-oni — and his father changed it immediately to the name he has carried since. The text records both without comment and moves on. It is one of the very few places in the book where a naming is overruled, and the reason is plain enough: a child was not going to be sent through life carrying an account of the worst hour of his family's life. The renaming is an act of protection performed within minutes of a death.

Meaning

son of the right hand

Hebrew, and the right hand is the side of favor and strength rather than a literal description. Some read it instead as son of the south, since facing east puts the south on the right, and both readings are defensible.

Fashion outlook

Benjaman sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

  • The name underneath is among the most durable in the West.
  • The meaning is warm and easy to explain to a child.
What to consider
  • Benjamin is overwhelmingly standard and this spelling gets corrected for life.
  • The word man appearing in it will be noticed by readers if not by listeners.
  • The generation that used this spelling is now elderly.
