Benigno
Masculine · “kindly”
Benigno is the Latin word for kindly, and the word turns out to have been about birth before it was about temperament. It is built from the elements meaning well and born, on the old and rather uncomfortable assumption that people of good family behave well. English kept the word, dropped the assumption, and now uses it mostly to describe tumours that are not going to kill you.

The story of Benigno
The most consequential modern Benigno stepped off an aircraft in Manila in the summer of nineteen eighty-three, after three years of exile, knowing that the government he had spent his career opposing had told him not to come. He was shot on the stairway before he reached the ground. The killing produced two million people at his funeral, an election that the government rigged and lost anyway, and within three years a change of regime carried out largely in the streets. His widow became president. His son became president after her. The international airport he was shot at now carries his name, which means that arriving in the Philippines involves reading it, and the name has stayed politically live in a way that very few personal names anywhere do.
Meaning
kindly
The Latin adjective joins the word for well with the root that gives genus, gens and generous, all of which are about birth and descent. Its sense in classical Latin was already kind or generous rather than well-born, so the shift had happened before the name existed. The name is settled, common across the Catholic world, and carried by a saint and by a number of well-documented modern bearers.
