Benard
Masculine · “bear”
Benard is Bernard without its first r, and the spelling is far more widespread than an American reader would guess. It is the ordinary written form of the name across much of East Africa, where Bernard arrived with missionary schooling and settled into a spelling that matches how it is said. In America it appears a century earlier and for a different reason, but the result on paper is identical.

The story of Benard
The best-known Bernard is not the abbot or the preacher but a pass. Bernard of Menthon founded hospices on the two highest routes across the western Alps, places where travelers who mistimed a crossing could survive the night, and both passes carry his name. The monks kept dogs, bred large and heavy for working in snow, and by the nineteenth century the dogs were more famous than the hospices; the breed took the saint's name and is now the only thing most people associate with it. He was declared patron of the Alps and of mountaineers in the twentieth century. None of that explains the missing r in this spelling, which is a separate matter: English and several other languages find two r sounds in one short word awkward, and the first one is the one that gives way.
Meaning
bear, brave
The base name joins two Germanic elements, one naming the bear and one meaning hardy or brave, and both are certain. The missing r changes nothing about the sense. It is worth being clear that this is a spelling of Bernard rather than a separate name with its own history, however independently it now behaves in the records of several countries.
How the name formed

Fashion outlook
Benard sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Ben is available from the first day and needs no explanation anywhere in the world.
- It is a genuine and very widespread spelling, not an American invention, which is worth knowing.
- The back stress gives it a shape the English pronunciation of Bernard has lost.
- It will be read as a typo for Bernard by nearly everybody who meets it in writing.
- The stress is unsettled between the front and the back depending on who is saying it.
- In daily use it will be shortened to Ben, and the distinctive part of the name will disappear.
