Belvia joins the Romance word for beautiful to an ending that carries nothing, which is how a good many American names of the eighteen-eighties were made. The same first syllable begins the name of a kind of building that exists only to be looked out of.

Our story of Belvia
A belvedere is a building with no other purpose than the view. The Italian word means beautiful sight, and it names a structure — a turret, a summerhouse, a roofed platform on a hill — put up so that somebody can look out of it, which makes it one of the few building types defined entirely by what it is for rather than by what it contains. The Vatican's Belvedere courtyard is named for the view from the villa above it, and the two famous sculptures found there took their names from the courtyard: the Apollo Belvedere and the Belvedere Torso. English borrowed the word for cupolas on American houses in the nineteenth century, which is why a farmhouse in Ohio can have one.

Not established
The front is the Latin and Italian word for beautiful, used freely in American naming of the period. The -via ending is decorative. Nothing documents the combination, and the Latin word for a road that it resembles is almost certainly a coincidence.

Fashion outlook
Belvia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both cuts produce short forms and each is a standing name.
- Six letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
- It is genuinely rare and belongs to almost nobody now living.
- Belva, Belvie and Bellvia will all be written for it.
- Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
- Only the front carries a meaning, and the ending carries none.
Nobody names a baby alone.
