The ton at the end of a thousand English place names is the word town, and it did not mean a town. Old English tun was an enclosure: a farmstead with a fence round it, then a village, then eventually a town, and the ending is on the map everywhere because enclosing a piece of ground was what settlement consisted of.

Where it comes from

The story of Belton

The tun ending is the commonest in English place naming and it maps the country's history exactly. It appears in Kingston, Preston, Weston, Norton, Sutton, Bolton, Brighton and thousands of others, always meaning the enclosed settlement of somebody or something, and the first element does the identifying: a direction, a crop, an owner, a feature. Because the word later came to mean a town in the modern sense, the endings now look grander than they were; a place called a tun in the ninth century might be three families and a fence. The word also survives on its own as town and, remarkably, as the second half of the word for a farmyard in some dialects.

Farmstead by the bell, or the beautiful one

There are several Beltons in England and they do not all have the same origin. Some are from the Old English for a bell, probably a bell-shaped hill or a place with a bell tower; some may be from a French word for beautiful; one at least is from a personal name. A surname taken from any of them carries the same spelling and none of the meaning.

Belton sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1923, with 33 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Belton sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, firm and easy to spell once heard, with no silent letters.
  • It has a documented English origin that can be found on any map.
  • It reads as established rather than invented, which most surname-names of its length do not.
What to consider
  • It reads as a surname and will be entered in the wrong column on forms.
  • The first syllable collides with an ordinary English word about clothing.
  • It is strongly dated to the nineteenth century in American records.
