The story of Beecher
In the middle 1850s, settlers going to Kansas to make it a free state were shipped rifles in crates marked as Bibles, and the guns were known for a generation as Beecher's Bibles — after the preacher who had said from his pulpit that a rifle was a greater moral agency than a Bible in that particular territory. His sister's novel had come out a few years earlier and was the best-selling book of the century after the Bible itself. Whatever one makes of the family, they were the loudest voices in the argument that ended with a war, and the record shows the country naming its sons after them.
Meaning
a dweller by the beeches
The surname is an English topographic one, meaning somebody who lived by a beech tree or a beech wood. It became an American first name in the second half of the nineteenth century almost entirely as a commemoration — families who admired the preacher or the novelist, or who belonged to the churches that supported them, put the surname on a son.

Fashion outlook
Beecher sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is read correctly at sight and holds no spelling difficulties.
- The tree behind it is concrete and pleasant, which most surname-names lack.
- It carries a real and consequential piece of American history.
- The family it commemorates is now argued about as much as admired.
- It reads unmistakably as a surname and some people will treat it as one.
- It is entirely out of use, so there is no model for how it wears on a child.
