Rebecca is the only one of the matriarchs who is asked whether she wants to go. Her family says the decision is hers, they call her in and put the question, and she answers in two words. Nothing else in those chapters gives a woman that.

Where it comes from

The story of Beckie

The passage is unusual in its detail: a servant is sent to find a wife, he sets a test at a well, she passes it by watering ten camels without being asked, and when the negotiation is done her brother and mother try to delay her departure. The servant presses. They call the girl and ask her directly whether she will go with this man, and she says she will. Puritan families took the name from that chapter in the seventeenth century, and it has been in English use since. Beckie is the American familiar form, and the record carries it from the very first year of the count.

Fashion outlook

Beckie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly by everyone on first hearing.
  • It works as a full name and as a short form, which gives a family two ways to use it.
  • It has an unbroken run in American records from the first year they were kept.
What to consider
  • Becky is the commoner spelling and will be written instead.
  • It reads as a familiar form, and formal settings will look for a Rebecca that may not exist.
  • The name's meaning is genuinely unknown, so books that give one are guessing.
