The performer was born in Texas, appeared on stage as a child, made comedies opposite Harold Lloyd through the nineteen twenties, survived the arrival of sound when a great many silent actors did not, moved to London, and spent the war years broadcasting to British audiences from a city being bombed. She was awarded an American civilian medal for it.
