Where it comes from

Our story of Baylee

English has five words spelled bay and no two of them are related. A bay of the sea is from Old French, probably from a Latin word about an opening. A bay tree is from a completely different French word, for a berry, which is why bay leaves and laurel are the same thing. A bay horse is reddish-brown, from Latin badius. A bay window is an architectural compartment, from the same root as the sea bay by a different route. And a dog gives tongue at bay, from Old French abaier, which is imitative — the sound a hound makes — and that is where being at bay and holding something at bay both come from: the quarry cornered and the dogs barking. Dictionaries list all five separately and nobody confuses them.

The surname behind it is usually occupational, from the office of a bailiff, though a topographical origin is also proposed. This spelling respells it and there is no evidence any family had the office in mind.

Baylee sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1997, with 73 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Baylee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy and quick.
What to consider
  • Bailey, Bailee and Baileigh are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The spelling has to be given aloud every time.
  • The record holds it for sons as well, so it signals nothing about sex.
