Where it comes from

The story of Baruch

Baruch ben Neriah wrote Jeremiah's prophecies from dictation, and Jehoiakim cut the scroll column by column and burned it in a brazier; Jeremiah dictated it again. Baruch Spinoza was excommunicated at twenty-three. The name is standard in Orthodox communities and is in current American use.

Meaning

blessed

From the Hebrew barukh, 'blessed', from the root b-r-k, which also gives berekh, 'knee' — kneeling and blessing being one word. Every Jewish blessing opens barukh atah. The Hebrew is transparent and undisputed.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That the king burned the scroll and it was simply rewritten is a first-rate story.
  • That blessing and knee are one Hebrew root is a genuinely good detail.
  • Spinoza is a first-rate bearer.
What to consider
  • The final ch is mispronounced by nearly all English speakers.
  • It reads as specifically Jewish and observant.
  • Baruch and Boruch are both in circulation.
