The story of Barnie
The Book of Acts introduces a man named Joseph whom the apostles called Barnabas, and explains the name as 'son of encouragement'; Aramaic bar means 'son', but the second half does not easily yield that meaning, and scholars still debate it. Barney grew up in English as the everyday form of Barnabas, and in Ireland and America of Bernard as well. Berna Eli Oldfield, known to everyone as Barney, became the most famous racing driver in America; in 1903 he was credited as the first to drive a mile in a minute on an American track, and for decades traffic police would ask speeding motorists who they thought they were, Barney Oldfield.

Barnabas is explained in the Book of Acts as 'son of encouragement', but scholars have long struggled to get that meaning out of the Aramaic. Bernard is Germanic, 'bear' and 'hardy'. Barnie can come from either.
