Where it comes from

The story of Barbaraann

Saint Barbara is the patron of artillerymen, miners, tunnellers and anyone else who works with explosives, because the man who killed her in the legend was struck by lightning immediately afterwards. The association stuck hard enough to enter technical vocabulary: on a Spanish or Italian warship the powder magazine is called the santabárbara, and the word is still in naval dictionaries. Artillery units across Catholic Europe and Latin America keep her feast on the fourth of December, tunnelling crews put statues of her at the working face, and the Spanish army's artillery corps holds a formal celebration. She was removed from the universal calendar in nineteen sixty-nine on the grounds that nothing reliable is known about her, and the soldiers and miners went on regardless.

Meaning

foreign, joined to Anne

The Greek word meant a foreigner and imitated the sound of unintelligible speech. The second half is the Hebrew Hannah, meaning favor or grace. The compound is American and has no separate meaning; which half a family used day to day is not recorded.

Pronouncing Barbaraann

BAR-bruh-ann

Three syllables in ordinary American speech, since the middle of the first name reduces. Both halves keep a beat, which is the audible sign of a double name written solid.

Fashion outlook

Barbaraann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are common, so nothing has to be spelled out by sound.
  • It collapses to either half and both are complete names.
  • Written solid it occupies one field on a form instead of two.
What to consider
  • Barbara Ann and Barbara-Ann are both recorded, and systems will split or hyphenate it.
  • A song fixed the two names together in a lot of heads.
  • It reads as belonging firmly to one mid-century generation.
