The story of Azuri
Lapis lazuli came from Sar-i Sang in Badakhshan, essentially the only source known to the ancient world, and its pigment cost more than gold. The word traveled from Persian to Arabic to Spanish and French, losing its initial l on the way. Azuri appears in the American registers in the 2010s and is in current use.

The likeliest route is the English azure, through the Old French azur, the Arabic lazward and the Persian lazhward — the lapis lazuli stone. A second route treats Azuri as a coinage on the Az- front and -uri ending, alongside Zuri, the Swahili for beautiful. Both are in circulation.

The Sonjia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Azuri's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sonjia climbed just as high around 1967, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sonjia's path sketches the road Azuri is walking now.
Azuri sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The lapis-lazuli etymology is one of the best color-word histories there is.
- Zuri is available as a short form that is a real Swahili name.
- Three syllables of open vowels, which carries unusually well.
- The origin is split between the color word and a Swahili-influenced coinage.
- The stress placement splits between two readings.
- It is very new as a given name.
