Avraham
Masculine · “father of a multitude of nations”
Avraham is the Hebrew name as it is actually said in Hebrew — the form behind the Abraham of Genesis, kept in its own spelling rather than passed through Greek and Latin first. It has one of the longest continuous written records of any name on earth, and it still ends the way it began, with the stress landing on that final syllable: av-rah-HAHM.

The story of Avraham
The name belongs to the opening chapters of the Hebrew Bible, where Avram is renamed Avraham and becomes the patriarch claimed by Judaism, Christianity and Islam alike. From Hebrew it traveled outward in every direction: as Abraam in the Greek Septuagint, as Abraham in Latin and then English, as Ibrahim in Arabic, Turkish and Persian, as Avrum and Avrohom in Yiddish-speaking Europe. The spelling Avraham is the direct transliteration from Hebrew, the standard form in modern Israel and the one used by American families who prefer the Hebrew to the English. That preference shows in the map: it is strongest in New York, New Jersey and Florida.

father of a multitude of nations
Genesis 17:5 gives the reading directly, explaining the new name as av hamon goyim, 'father of a multitude of nations'. Philologists reading the parts separately point instead to the earlier form Avram, from av 'father' and a root meaning 'high, exalted' — 'exalted father'. Both readings are old and both are serious; the biblical one is the one carried in Jewish tradition.

Pronouncing Avraham
av-rah-HAHM
Hebrew puts the stress on the last syllable. In American English it is often flattened to AV-ra-ham, closer to the familiar Abraham; both are heard, and either can be corrected once and remembered.

The Ajay test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Avraham's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ajay climbed just as high around 2003, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ajay's path sketches the road Avraham is walking now.

The trade-off
- Instantly recognizable, because everyone already knows the name through Abraham — no explaining who the name belongs to, only how it is spelled.
- Has a ready-made short form in Avi, in real use for generations and short enough to work anywhere.
- Exists in nearly every language a family might need it in: Abraham, Ibrahim, Abrahán, Bram, Avrum.
- One of the oldest names still in continuous use, with an unbroken written record stretching back to antiquity.
- Common enough to be understood, uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- Expect it to be written Abraham by default — forms, teachers, doctors' offices. The v is the whole point of this spelling, and it will need saying more than once.
- Four syllables invites shortening, so a child will probably be Avi to somebody whether or not that was the plan.
- It carries a clear Hebrew signal. In the states where it is strongest that reads as entirely ordinary; elsewhere it may be met as unfamiliar, even though the name behind it is not.
- Stress placement varies between the Hebrew and the Americanized reading, so the family may hear it said two ways for life.
