The story of Avangeline
The British deportation of the French-speaking Acadians in 1755 scattered families across the Atlantic seaboard and to Louisiana, where their descendants became the Cajuns. A poem published in 1847 told the story through a woman searching for her betrothed, and it did an enormous amount to fix that history in the American imagination. The name spread with the poem, particularly in Louisiana, where a parish carries it. The a-spelling is recent and American.
Meaning
good news; gospel
Greek eu, good, and angelia, a message, giving euangelion, the good news, which English translates as gospel. The poet built the name from that word with a French-looking ending, and the meaning of the parts is not in doubt.

The Tambi test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Avangeline's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tambi climbed just as high around 1958, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tambi's path sketches the road Avangeline is walking now.
Avangeline sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It offers four genuine short forms, Eva and Evie and Lina and Angie.
- It carries a documented poem and a real piece of North American history.
- The meaning is settled and can be stated in two words.
- Evangeline is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected constantly.
- Four syllables is long for American forms and gets clipped without being asked.
- The ending is said two ways, -leen and -line, and the spelling settles neither.
