The story of Auriana
Aurum is the Latin for gold and it is unusually productive in English. It gives the chemical symbol Au, the aureole around a saint's head in painting, the adjective aureate for over-gilded prose, the aureus, a Roman coin, and, through aureolus, the golden oriole, a bird that genuinely is that color. The Roman family name Aurelius comes from the same root, and Aurelia was its feminine, borne by Julius Caesar's mother among others. Aurora, the dawn, is a separate word from a different root, though the two have blurred in modern naming. Auriana is built on the material rather than descended from it, which is the usual situation with names that end in -ana.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Auriana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Selby climbed just as high around 1937, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Selby's path sketches the road Auriana is walking now.
Auriana sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
