Aundrea
Feminine · “manly”
Aundrea is given to both — 4,762 girls and 181 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Aundrea writes with au a syllable that nobody actually says. The first vowel of Andrea is reduced almost to nothing in speech — the name begins with a soft grunt, not a full a — and spelling it au is one way American families have marked that. The name it varies is Greek and, in Italy, belongs to men, which is one of the more persistent confusions in European naming.

The story of Aundrea
Andrea entered English use as a woman's name in the seventeenth century and became very widely given in twentieth-century America. Names at that scale attract respellings, and the au- versions are a coherent set: Aundrea, Aundrey, Deaundre, Laundra. What they have in common is a decorative treatment of an unstressed opening syllable, which costs nothing in sound and marks the name on paper. This spelling has been in American records since the middle of the twentieth century, most strongly in Texas and California.
Meaning
manly, brave
From the Greek andreios, manly, built on the ordinary Greek word for a man. Andrea is the feminine of Andrew in English and German, and the masculine of the same name in Italian — so an Italian Andrea is a man and an American Andrea is a woman, and both are correct in their own countries.

Pronouncing Aundrea
AHN-dree-uh
Three syllables, stress on the first. Some families say awn-DRAY-uh, following the Italian shape; both are heard in America. The au makes no reliable difference to the sound, which is why it is available as a spelling choice.

The Larhonda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aundrea's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Larhonda climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record.
