From Aethelthryth to Audri
The story of Audri
Aethelthryth, a seventh-century East Anglian princess, founded the abbey at Ely and died in 679 of a throat tumour that she is said to have regarded as penance for the necklaces she wore as a girl. Her name was contracted through the Middle Ages to Audrey, and the annual fair at Ely on her feast sold cheap lace chokers in her memory, called Saint Audrey's lace. The phrase slurred, first to tawdry lace and then to the adjective on its own, and by the seventeenth century tawdry meant cheap and showy. Audrey rose sharply in American use after 1953 through one film star, and the respellings followed; Audri's best year is 2010.
Meaning
noble strength
From Old English Aethelthryth, combining aethel, noble, and thryth, strength or power. Middle English contracted it savagely to Audrey. The aethel element is the same one in Adelaide, Alice and the German edel; thryth is a distinctly Old English element that did not survive elsewhere. The -i ending of this spelling is a modern American substitution.
