Aubre drops the y from a name that has been in English since the Normans, and it is recorded for boys and girls alike. Its opening syllable is shared with a vegetable whose name is a good demonstration of what happens to a word that crosses four languages.

Our story of Aubre
Aubergine started in Sanskrit, passed into Persian, then into Arabic, where it acquired the Arabic article and became al-badinjan. Catalan took it from Arabic and produced alberginia; French took it from Catalan, dropped the article it no longer recognized, and arrived at aubergine. Meanwhile Portuguese took a different branch of the same Arabic word to India and handed back brinjal, which is what the vegetable is called across South Asia and the Caribbean. And English, presented with both, looked at the thing and called it an eggplant, because an early cultivated variety was small, white and shaped like an egg. One plant, four words, and only the English one describes what it looks like.

If the name is Aubrey shortened, it belongs to an old Germanic name brought to England by the Normans. If it is a modern build on a French-looking shape, it carries nothing inherited. The record holds this spelling for both sexes and does not choose.

Fashion outlook
Aubre sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is entirely familiar, so it is read correctly at first sight by everyone.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
- It is short on paper and easy to write, with no silent letters to explain except the ending.
- The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
- Aubrey and Aubree are both far commoner, so this version will be corrected constantly.
- No origin is documented for the trimmed form, so the meaning question has two answers and no settled one.
