The story of Arvind
In Sanskrit the name is Aravinda, and its final a is pronounced. Hindi and several other north Indian languages regularly drop that final vowel, and many medial ones, when they speak Sanskrit names, so Aravinda becomes Arvind and Ramachandra becomes Ramchandra. Bengali keeps more vowels and shifts them, and there the same name became Aurobindo: Sri Aurobindo, the revolutionary who turned philosopher and founded an ashram in Pondicherry, was born Aravinda Ghose. Indian families brought Arvind to America, where it keeps the Hindi shape.
