Where it comes from

Our story of Arville

Latin villa was a country estate: a working farm with a house on it. As Latin turned into French the word narrowed to the farm and then broadened to the settlement that grew around it, and by the time it was being attached to place names in quantity it meant something like a village or a town. France has thousands. America then imported the ending on its own and used it for new towns everywhere, which is why the country is full of places whose names end in it that have no French connection whatever. The word therefore ran from one rich man's farm to an American county seat in about fifteen hundred years without ever quite stopping.

Not established

The ending is the French one meaning a settlement; the front is not securely identified. The American first name is not documented and may be a build using the ending as a free element.

Arville sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1923, with 29 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Arville sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at first sight by nearly everybody.
  • Arv comes off the front as a short form and works for either sex.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
What to consider
  • The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
  • It reads as a place name to most listeners, which suits some families and not others.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
