Arvel
Masculine
Arvel belongs to a cluster rather than to a family tree. Around the turn of the last century American registers fill up with men's names ending in -el that have no European parents: Arvel, Orvel, Ardell, Odell, Arnell. They appear together, they behave alike, and no one of them is the source of the others.

The story of Arvel
There is a northern English word that these letters land on by accident. An arval was a funeral feast — specifically the ale drunk after a burial, from Norse words meaning inheritance and ale joined together, because the drinking marked the passing of property as much as the passing of a person. The word survived in Yorkshire and the north into the nineteenth century, attached to a particular kind of small spiced biscuit served at the graveside. There is no reason at all to connect it to an American name coined in Appalachia and the south, and the resemblance is coincidence. But it is a good word, and a page that knows it should say so.

Fashion outlook
Arvel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, plain and completely easy to say on first meeting.
- The spelling causes no trouble once the stress is placed at the front.
- It is genuinely rare with no strong associations attached.
- There is no meaning to pass on, and any page supplying one has invented it.
- Arvil and Arval are equally recorded, so the spelling is unstable.
- The generation that used it is now very old.
