Arriana
Feminine · “most holy”
Arriana is the Italian form of Ariadne with an extra r, and the story behind the original does not end the way the famous half of it suggests. She gives the thread, the hero escapes the labyrinth, and then he abandons her on an island on the way home. What happens next is the part the school version leaves out, and it is considerably better.

The story of Arriana
Left on Naxos, Ariadne is found by Dionysos, who marries her. In the version most often told, the crown he gives her is thrown into the sky and becomes a constellation, which is still called the northern crown and is still visible. The story is unusual in Greek myth for what it does with an abandoned woman: she is not punished, not transformed into an animal, and not written out. She becomes the wife of a god and gets a permanent place in the sky, which is a considerably better outcome than the hero manages. The labyrinth itself is a separate problem. Nothing answering to the description has ever been found on Crete, and the leading suggestion is that the palace complex at Knossos, with its hundreds of rooms and confusing plan, is the whole of the original.
Meaningscholars disagree
most holy
The Greek name is usually read as an intensifying prefix followed by a word meaning holy or pure, giving something like most holy, and that reading is the standard one. It is not certain: the second element has other possible sources and the name may be pre-Greek, like a good deal of Cretan vocabulary. The Italian form and the American respellings change nothing about the question.

Four syllables with the stress on the third. The doubled r is inert in English; in Italian a doubled consonant is genuinely longer, so the same spelling does real work there and none here.

Fashion outlook
Arriana sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The rhythm is long and even, and it carries well when said in full.
- Ari, Anna and Ria are three completely different short forms from one certificate.
- It has a genuine ancient story behind it that a child will actually want to hear.
- At least four spellings of this name are in wide use and yours is among the rarer ones.
- The doubled r does nothing in English and will be dropped by most people writing it.
- Four syllables invite shortening, and the world will shorten it.
