The story of Arnie
Arnold came to England with the Normans and was in steady use through the medieval period; it declined and then revived strongly in the nineteenth century. American use peaked in the 1900s and 1910s, and the clipped Arnie appears alongside it as an independent birth-record name in those decades — the same pattern as Willie, Charlie and Freddie in the same period. Its best-known modern bearers, the golfer Arnold Palmer and the actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, have kept the short form familiar long after the full name went out of fashion.
Meaning
eagle ruler; power of the eagle
Germanic arn or aran means eagle — the same word as German Aar and, at a distance, English erne, an old name for the sea eagle. Wald means rule or power, the same element as in Harald, Oswald and Reinaldo. So Arnwald is eagle-ruler. The derivation is settled and appears in every standard reference. Arnie is the English -ie diminutive of it.
