Arminda ends in the -inda that English and Italian poets used for two centuries to make names that sounded classical without being anybody's. Its front is more solid: an old Germanic element that also stands, probably, in the name of the man who destroyed three Roman legions in a forest.

Arminda first appears in US birth records in 1881 — 144 years ago. The typical Arminda alive today was born around 1964, making them about 61 years old. About 800 people named Arminda are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Arminda most popular?

Where it comes from

The story of Arminda

The Roman writers called him Arminius, which is a Latin dress for a Germanic name most people take to have contained that same element. He had been raised in Rome, given citizenship and equestrian rank, and sent back as an officer with the army; he then led three legions into the Teutoburg Forest and destroyed them, along with their commander, and Rome never seriously tried to hold the country beyond the Rhine again. The name in its softer form belonged to poetry and then to opera. Mozart wrote an Arminda into a comic opera composed when he was eighteen, and Spanish and Italian families used the name steadily through the nineteenth century, which is how it reached American records.

Whole, universal

The first element is generally taken as the Germanic irmin or ermin, a word carrying a sense of whole, great or universal, which stands at the front of Ermintrude and Irmgard and behind the German Hermann. The -inda ending is decoration with no sense in any language. Both halves are uncertain enough that this reading should be treated as the best available guess rather than a fact.

Arminda sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1980, with 27 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Arminda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It works unchanged in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, which few names of this shape manage.
  • Mindy is waiting inside it as an entirely ordinary everyday name.
  • Long and formal on paper, with a rhythm that is easy to say once.
What to consider
  • The -inda ending places the name in the nineteenth century for most American ears.
  • It will be heard as Amanda and as Arminta, both of which are commoner.
  • The meaning is a scholarly reconstruction rather than a settled fact, so it cannot be stated flatly to a child.
