Arlinda is an American compound and, entirely separately, a common Albanian name. In Albania and Kosovo it is ordinary, one of a set of women's names built on a native element, and it has no connection whatever to the American formation that joins an Arlene front to a Linda ending. Two systems, two continents, one word.

How old is the name Arlinda?

Arlinda first appears in US birth records in 1939 — 86 years ago. The typical Arlinda alive today was born around 1968, making them about 57 years old. About 1,300 people named Arlinda are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Arlinda most popular?

Arlinda peaked in 1949, reaching #1056 nationally. See the whole 1949 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Arlinda

Albanian naming went through a deliberate renewal in the twentieth century, with families and then the state favoring names built from Albanian words over the Ottoman and Christian stock that had dominated before. The result is a large modern layer of names that are genuinely native and genuinely recent, built from elements about light, birth, freedom and the country itself. Names of that layer are now carried by two or three generations and read as traditional inside Albania and as unfamiliar everywhere else. The American name arrived at the same letters by a different road entirely, joining two pieces that were both fashionable in the middle of the century, and neither community would recognize the other's version as their own.

Meaningnot established

Not established

As an American formation neither half carries meaning: the front belongs to a family with no traceable ancestor and the ending is a name used as a suffix. The Albanian name is a separate matter with its own derivation, and it is not the source of the American one. A given certificate could be either, and the spelling records nothing that would settle it.

How the name formed

  1. An Albanian name built from native elements
  2. An American compound of an Arlene front and a Linda ending
  3. Both arriving at the same spelling
  4. Arlinda in the American registers from the nineteen thirties

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Albanian says it much the same way, which is a coincidence rather than a connection, and gives the final vowel a fuller sound than English does.

Arlinda sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1949, with 72 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Arlinda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Linda sits inside it as a completely familiar short form.
  • It is a real traditional name somewhere in the world, which most American compounds are not.
  • The rhythm is even and the name is easy to say correctly on a first attempt.
What to consider
  • It will be written Arlynda or Erlinda by people taking it from speech.
  • There is no meaning on the American route, and the Albanian one belongs to a different name.
  • It is firmly of the middle of the twentieth century.
