Arial is a typeface designed to fit exactly where Helvetica sat. It was drawn in 1982 with the same widths, so a document could swap one for the other without moving a line, which is why designers argue about it.

When was the name Arial most popular?

Arial peaked in 1991, reaching #1996 nationally. Today it ranks #10917, 8,921 places below that high. See the whole 1991 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Arial

The typeface was commissioned by Monotype for IBM laser printers and drawn to be metrically identical to Helvetica: every character occupies the same width, so text set in one can be reset in the other with no reflow, while the letterforms differ in their terminals and their capital R. Microsoft bundled it with Windows and it became one of the most widely seen typefaces in the world, which is why it attracts a peculiar amount of professional contempt. The girl's name is a different thing entirely and its 1991 peak follows a 1989 animated film whose heroine carries it, spelled with an e. That collision, a Hebrew name, a Disney character and a font, all landing on nearly one spelling, is a good example of how modern names acquire associations.

Hebrew ariel, lion of God

Arial as a personal name is a spelling of Ariel, Hebrew for lion of God. The typeface of the same name was released in 1982 and is unrelated. The American female peak is 1991, following an animated film of 1989.

Arial sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1991, with 69 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The Tashika test

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Arial's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tashika climbed just as high around 1976, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tashika's path sketches the road Arial is walking now.
