The story of Areanna
Ariadne became Arianna in Italian, and in 1608 Claudio Monteverdi set her story as an opera for a court wedding in Mantua. The score is lost; only Arianna's lament, 'Lasciatemi morire' — 'Let me die' — survived, because it was copied and printed on its own, and it became one of the most imitated pieces of its century. American parents took up Arianna and Ariana in the later twentieth century, and Areanna is one of the spellings that followed. Its first four letters spell area, the Latin word for a level open space such as a threshing floor, but that is an accident of spelling and not part of the name.
