Our story of Ardella
Every generation has a suffix doing most of the work, and in the second half of the nineteenth century it was -ella, borrowed from Italian and Latin diminutives and attached to almost anything: Ardella, Luella, Estella, Rosella, Zella, Fidella, Ozella. The names it produced look invented because they were, and they were made by the same process that later produced the -lyn and -leigh families. What is worth noticing is the timing. Ella became one of the leading American girls' names in the 2000s, a century and a quarter after the suffix that contains it had already peaked, and the two events are not related: the suffix wave came first and produced compounds, and the standalone name came much later.
