The story of Arcadio
Arcadia was landlocked, mountainous and pastoral, and its inhabitants were regarded by other Greeks as rustic and old-fashioned. Theocritus set his pastoral poems in Sicily. It was Virgil, writing the Eclogues in the 30s BC, who moved the genre to Arcadia and made it an imaginary country of shepherds, singing contests and untroubled leisure, and every subsequent European pastoral descends from that decision: Sannazaro, Sidney, Poussin and the phrase Et in Arcadia ego, which even in death has a claim on the place. The name Arcadius was carried by an eastern Roman emperor and by several saints, which is how it reached Spanish and Italian naming and, from there, the American records.

Line the two peaks up, and Morse's path sketches the road Arcadio is walking now.
