Araya reaches American birth records from several directions at once — a Thai given name, a village in the Basque hills, a surname carried through Spain, Latin America and Japan, and, for many families here, simply a cousin of Aria and Maya. Three open syllables and not a hard consonant among them. Its American wave is genuinely recent: this is a name still mostly worn by children, which makes it feel current rather than revived.

How old is the name Araya?

Araya first appears in US birth records in 1979 — 46 years ago. The typical Araya is a kid of about 9 — this name's wave is very recent. About 4,200 people named Araya are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Araya most popular?

Araya peaked in 2022, reaching #899 nationally. Today it ranks #1052, 153 places below that high. See the whole 2022 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Araya

The oldest documented thread runs through Sanskrit ārya, 'noble', which passed into Pali as ariya and from there into Thai, where Araya is an established woman's name. Quite independently, Araya is a place in Álava in the Basque Country and one of the older surnames of the Spanish-speaking world, carried to the Americas in the colonial period and attached to the salt-pan peninsula of Araya in Venezuela; it is also a surname in Japan and a given name in Ethiopia. None of these lines has to explain the American Araya, which appeared on the charts only within the last few decades, in the same stretch of years that made Aria, Amaya and Maya household spellings. It is a name whose roads all lead to the same three syllables without ever having met.

Meaningscholars disagree

'noble, civilized' in the Thai name, from Sanskrit ārya — though the American Araya has more than one possible source

Three separate strands share the spelling. In Thailand, Araya (อารยา) comes through Pali ariya from Sanskrit ārya, 'noble, civilized'. In the Basque Country, Araya (Araia) is a place name, and Araya is a long-established surname in Spain and across Latin America, as well as a surname in Japan; it is also used as a given name in Ethiopia. In the United States it often functions as an extension of the Aria–Maya–Amaya sound family, in which case no one meaning applies. Nobody can tell you which of these a given American Araya descends from.

Pronouncing Araya

uh-RYE-uh

Two pronunciations are both in real use: uh-RYE-uh, rhyming the last part with Maya, and ah-RAH-yah, closer to the Spanish and Thai originals. Neither is a mistake — you get to pick, and then say it first when introducing her.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sits inside a sound family Americans already read at a glance — Aria, Maya, Amaya — so the spelling rarely needs to be repeated letter by letter.
  • A real name in Thai, Spanish, Basque and Amharic contexts, which means it travels without becoming unrecognizable.
  • Established short forms already exist: Raya, Ara, Rae — none of them invented for the occasion.
  • Three open syllables with no consonant clusters, easy for a small child to say early.
What to consider
  • The two pronunciations, uh-RYE-uh and ah-RAH-yah, will both be guessed at by strangers. Nothing goes wrong, but she will spend her life correcting some people, or deciding she does not mind.
  • It is very close to Aria, Arya, Amaya and Araia, and will occasionally be written as one of them, especially in speech-to-text and on forms.
  • Araya is a widespread surname in Spanish-speaking countries and in Japan, so it will sometimes be read as a last name on lists and rosters.
  • Its American record is short, so nearly everyone carrying it here is young. There is no adult template yet — which some parents like and others would rather not be first to.
