Where it comes from

The story of Arabelle

Arabella first appears in twelfth-century Scotland, most likely as a written variation of Amabel that stuck. Arabella Stuart had a claim to the English throne and died in the Tower. The -belle spelling is a French-influenced modern variant. It appears in American records in current use.

Meaningscholars disagree

lovable; yielding to prayer

Two readings. The likeliest is a Scottish medieval alteration of Amabel, from the Latin amabilis, 'lovable'. A second treats it as the Latin orabilis, 'yielding to prayer'. The -belle ending was later reinterpreted as the French for beautiful. None is fully settled.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That a scribal slip may have created the whole name is a genuinely good history.
  • Bella and Ara are two short forms, both with real use.
  • The end-stressed -belle gives it a crisper finish than Arabella.
What to consider
  • Arabella is far commoner and is stressed differently.
  • The origin is genuinely unsettled between two Latin roots.
  • It will need spelling out every time.
