Where it comes from

The story of Aprille

Chaucer began the General Prologue of The Canterbury Tales in the late fourteenth century with April's sweet showers piercing the drought of March to the root. In the Middle English of that line the final e of Aprille is sounded, giving the word three syllables to fit the meter. The 'his' in 'his shoures' does not make April a man: English had no word its until around 1600, and his served for things as well as people. The given name keeps that medieval spelling, with its once-sounded e now silent.

Fashion outlook

Aprille sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Tied to one of the most quoted opening lines in English poetry.
  • Said like April, a familiar name, so it needs no teaching once people know it.
  • Has cousins in other languages: Avril in French, Abril in Spanish.
What to consider
  • The -ille ending looks French, and some people will say ah-PREEL. A family will need to settle on AY-pril and say it.
  • Forms and spellcheck will reduce it to April; the extra letters need spelling out.
  • The Chaucer connection is real but literary, and many people will simply see an unusual spelling of April. The line is there for anyone who asks.
