The story of Apolonio
Apollonius of Perga worked in Alexandria in the third century before Christ and wrote eight books on conic sections, of which seven survive. He was studying the curves you get by slicing a cone at different angles, and he needed names for them; the words he chose describe the relationship between areas in a geometric construction, and they mean roughly falling short, applying exactly and exceeding. Those three words are the ellipse, the parabola and the hyperbola. They passed unchanged into Latin, then into every European language, and they now describe planetary orbits, projectile paths and radio dishes. Two of them also went into rhetoric, where an ellipsis leaves something out and a hyperbole overstates, from exactly the same idea of falling short and going too far.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The god's name has no convincing Greek etymology. Proposals have connected it to words about destruction, about assembly and about a Hittite deity, and none has carried; the name may well be pre-Greek or borrowed from Anatolia. That is a remarkable thing to be able to say about one of the twelve Olympians, and it means the personal names built on it inherit nothing translatable.

Four syllables with the stress on the third. Spanish writes it with a single l where Greek and Italian double it, which is a Spanish spelling convention rather than a difference in the name.

Fashion outlook
Apolonio sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a genuine classical name with a continuous record of well over two thousand years.
- Polo is a warm and completely standard short form in Spanish-speaking families.
- It carries a mathematician whose vocabulary everybody still uses.
- Four syllables will be reduced to two by everybody outside the family.
- There is no meaning to give, because the god's own name is unexplained.
- It is very rare in American use and will need spelling out constantly.
