Antonyo
Masculine
Antonyo changes one letter in the Spanish form of a Roman family name, and the change is inaudible. The Roman family name itself has never been explained, which is true of a great many of them — and the ruins those families left behind gave English two words that started as the same word.

Our story of Antonyo
When Renaissance Romans dug into the buried rooms of Nero's palace, they found walls painted with figures that were half human, half plant, half animal — fantastic hybrids running into scrollwork. The rooms were underground by then and were called grottoes, so the style was called grotesque, meaning nothing worse than cave-style. Painters copied it enthusiastically; Raphael put it all over the Vatican loggias. Separately, the same excavated decoration was described as antique, and the English word antic came from that — first meaning a fantastic figure of the kind painted on those walls, then a grotesque performer, then a caper. So the modern words for a clown's tricks and for something repellently distorted both come from admiring the wall painting in a buried Roman dining room, and the distaste was added later.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The Roman family name has no established meaning. Ancient writers connected it to a Greek word about flowers and modern scholarship treats that as folk etymology; the family was probably Etruscan in origin, and Etruscan is barely readable. The changed letter in this spelling adds nothing.

Fashion outlook
Antonyo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Tony comes off it at once and works in several languages.
- The stress falls where both English and Spanish speakers expect it.
- The name is understood everywhere in the Western world.
- Antonio is overwhelmingly the standard spelling and this will be corrected constantly.
- The changed letter is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
- The Roman family name has no established meaning, so there is nothing to report there.
