Antoniette

Our story of Antoniette
French spells one of its commonest sounds with the two letters oi, and the sound they spell is wa: moi, roi, toi, boire. It was not always so. In older French the pair really did represent two vowels sliding into each other, and the modern pronunciation is the end of a long drift that the spelling never followed. English borrowed a great many French words before or during that drift, which is why we say choir and chamois and turquoise in ways that make no sense from either language alone. Antoinette carries the modern French value, so the name is an-twah-NET. Take the i away and the w has nothing to stand on, and the name becomes an-tuh-nee-ET, a different word with a different rhythm. One letter, four syllables instead of three.

Not established
The Roman family name behind Antony is of uncertain origin and probably not Latin at all, which is unusual for a name this well known. This spelling may come through French Antoinette or through Italian Antonia, and the record does not indicate which.
Pronouncing Antoniette
an-toh-nee-ET
Four syllables with the weight on the last. The French Antoinette is three syllables and has a w sound in the middle that this spelling does not.

Fashion outlook
Antoniette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Toni is available as a short form and works for a child of either sex.
- It matches the Italian Antonietta closely, so it is at home in more than one tradition.
- The name behind it is ancient, famous and needs no explaining.
- Antoinette is far commoner, and this spelling will be corrected to it by nearly everyone.
- The two spellings are said differently, so the correction is about sound as well as letters.
- One French queen owns the name in most people's minds, and her story ends badly.
