Where it comes from

The story of Antonia

She married Drusus, was widowed young, refused to remarry, and ran one of the largest households in Rome for forty years while the imperial family destroyed itself around her. Claudius was her son and she is said to have thought little of him; Caligula was her grandson and had her, by some accounts, driven to suicide. The name she carried is the plain Latin feminine of the clan name, and every Romance language kept it unchanged — Italian, Spanish and Portuguese all write Antonia exactly as Rome did, which very few Roman names manage.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Roman clan name has no established meaning. It is probably Etruscan and older than Latin's own records, and the family's claim to descend from a son of Hercules is decoration rather than evidence.

Antonia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1974, with 108 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Antonia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is spelled identically in Latin, Italian, Spanish, German and Portuguese.
  • Toni is a ready short form and a standing name of its own.
  • It has an unbroken run in American records from the first year they were kept, and a documented history two thousand years longer.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is long for American paperwork and the name will be shortened by others.
  • Its meaning is genuinely unknown, so books that give one are guessing.
  • The spelling is recorded for a small number of boys, though it reads overwhelmingly as a girl's name.
