The woman who made the name famous fought in three wars on two continents.

Where it comes from

The story of Annita

Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro was a Brazilian who left an unhappy marriage, joined a rebel movement, met and married an exiled Italian revolutionary, and spent the rest of her short life fighting alongside him: in Brazil, in Uruguay and finally in Italy, where she died of illness during a retreat at twenty-eight and eight months pregnant. She was a horsewoman and an artilleryman and was captured and escaped at least twice. Her husband named a legion after her and spent forty years telling people about her, and there are statues of her on horseback with a pistol and a baby in half the cities of Italy, which is not a combination the nineteenth century put up very often.

Meaning

favor, grace

The parent name is the Hebrew word for favor or grace, through Anna, and the reading is settled. The Spanish diminutive ending adds affection rather than sense. The doubled n is not Spanish: Spanish doubles only two consonants as a rule, and this is not one of them, so the spelling is an English intervention in a Spanish word.

How the name formed

  1. A Hebrew word for favor, through Anna
  2. Anita as the Spanish diminutive
  3. Carried across Latin America and into Italy
  4. Annita, with an English doubling added

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The doubled n is inaudible: Spanish and English both say a single n here, and the extra letter exists only on the page.

Fashion outlook

Annita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ann and Nita are two complete names available from one certificate.
  • The sound is familiar across English, Spanish and Portuguese alike.
  • It carries a genuinely remarkable historical bearer.
What to consider
  • Anita is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected into it constantly.
  • The doubled n is not Spanish, which is worth knowing before defending it as such.
  • It is firmly of the earlier twentieth century.
