Annell joins a Hebrew name to an ending that carries nothing, which is the ordinary way American naming lengthened a short name in the early twentieth century. That ending is also an old measure of cloth, and it differed from town to town in a way that made trade complicated.

How old is the name Annell?

Annell first appears in US birth records in 1915 — 110 years ago. The typical Annell alive today was born around 1942, making them about 83 years old. About 300 people named Annell are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Annell most popular?

Annell peaked in 1936, reaching #1549 nationally. See the whole 1936 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Annell

An ell was a measure of cloth based on the arm, and nobody agreed on the arm. The English ell was forty-five inches, the Scots ell about thirty-seven, the Flemish ell twenty-seven, and the French aune different again — so a merchant buying in Antwerp and selling in London had to know which ell a price referred to before he knew whether it was a good one. The word is the same as the Latin ulna, the forearm bone, and as the German Elle. Give him an inch and he'll take an ell is the older form of the proverb, and it makes better sense than the mile version, because the point was that an inch and an ell were both cloth measures, one absurdly larger than the other.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The front is the Hebrew name meaning grace or favor. The -ell ending is a free element with no meaning of its own, used because it made a name sound finished. Nothing documents an intention beyond that.

Annell sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1951, with 27 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Annell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • Six letters with no silent ones make it simple to spell aloud.
What to consider
  • Annelle, Anell and Anelle will all be written for it.
  • It reads as a build, so people will assume Ann is the real name.
  • The ending carries no meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
