The root under the name is anka, which in Sanskrit means a mark, and from that a great many things that are marks: a brand, a spot, a lap, a stage of a play, and a numeral. That last sense matters more than the others. The system of digits that the world now writes with, including the zero as a number in its own right, was worked out in India and passed to the Arabic-speaking world and from there to Europe, which is why the shapes are called Arabic numerals by people who ought to know better. Indian mathematicians had a vocabulary for it, and anka was part of that vocabulary. A name built from that root is carrying the word for a written mark from a tradition that gave writing its most useful set of marks.
